Audition: 110 in the Shade
110 in the Shade is a musical with a book by N. Richard Nash, lyrics by Tom Jones, and music by Harvey Schmidt. Auditions:Saturday, May 26 at 10:00 am, ACTA Theatre, Trussville.
This fresh, vibrant musical is based on the popular 1954 play, The Rainmaker by N. Richard Nash with music by the writers of The Fantasticks. Lizzie Curry is a cheerful, thirtyish spinster, resigned to the fact that no man outside her family has ever loved her or found her beautiful. Her father, H. C. Curry, a rancher, and brothers Noah and Jimmy, are fiercely loyal and desperately determined to get her a husband. In the hot and drought-stricken American southwest, spinster Lizzie’s advances are rebuffed by File, the divorced sheriff. Charismatic, travelling con man Bill Starbuck restores Lizzie’s self confidence, all the while promising the local farmers he can provide them some much needed rain. Then Starbuck works his magic on Lizzie. He persuades her to think of herself as a real woman – and every real woman is pretty! Beauty is inside you, and when you see love in a man’s eyes, you’ll be beautiful!
Those auditioning should prepare 16 bars of music showcasing their best. It is not necessary to sing something from the show. No prepared monologues are needed. Some will be asked to read from the script. Resumes and headshots are encouraged, but not mandatory. The cast calls for 2 primary female roles and 5 primary male roles with a number of supporting and ensemble roles (speaking and non-speaking), primarily ages 16 and up. A limited number of choldren will be considered for non-speaking townspeople roles.

Weekend
Opening tonight for this weekend only: Bards of Birmingham present The Tempest at East Lake United Methodist Church.
Opening tonight for a two-weekend run: Funny people making up funny stuff in Vulcan’s Underpants by Extemporaneous Theatre Company at Theatre Downtown.
Closing this weekend: RMTC‘s Singin’ in the Rain and the Park Players production of Cyrano de Bergerac. Red Mountain’s rain falls indoors; Park Players lost out last weekend to the stuff that actually falls from the sky, but the forecast looks good for this run’s final performances at Homewood Park.
Continuing: Some Girl(s) at TNT, a smart, sexy script with a smart, sexy cast. (While you’re there, tell Carl you’d love to see him play the lead in A Christmas Carol.)
Go, see, enjoy!
